How Can Surgical Orthodontics Help

Fix Bite Alignment

A misaligned bite can cause excessive tooth wear and jaw pain over time, and it may not be correctable through regular orthodontic treatment. Surgery can correct alignment, and subsequent treatment can correct the rest.

Improved Breathing

Jaw misalignment can restrict the airway, making it more difficult to breathe, particularly while sleeping. Correcting misalignment can improve airflow and reduce breathing issues.

Fix Facial Structure

Some aesthetic issues, such as excessive gums or extreme gaps, cannot be repaired by treatment alone. Orthodontic surgery can make the major repairs, while treatment can correct the rest. The result is a smile you can be proud to show anytime!

Prevent Tooth Wear

A misaligned jaw can cause teeth to rub against each other while chewing. This abnormal friction can lead to excessive tooth wear, which can lead to accelerated decay or even tooth fracture or loss. Alignment correction through surgery can alleviate this issue.

Surgical Orthodontics FAQ

Who needs surgical orthodontics?
Many people who need surgical orthodontics have severe dental issues, such as a misaligned jaw that cannot be corrected by orthodontic treatment alone. Since a proper bite can't be achieved otherwise, orthognathic surgery is performed to align the jaw properly. From there, standard orthodontic treatment can be carried out to move teeth into their proper position.
What causes the need for surgical intervention?
Some surgeries are performed for aesthetic reasons, but for the majority of patients, the reasons are health-related, such as a jaw abnormality or misaligned jaw. If treatment cannot eliminate the issue, then surgery is needed. Otherwise, treatment with braces or aligners may not solve the dental issues.
Can surgical orthodontics only be performed on adults?
Do I get orthodontic surgery or orthodontic treatment first?
If surgery is necessary, it will take place first to address the major issues. Then, treatment is fine-tuned before braces are applied to complete treatment and repair all of the dental issues.
Is orthodontic surgery covered by insurance?
Oral or orthognathic surgery may be covered by most major insurance providers. Check with your dental insurance provider to determine how much is covered, or let us assist you in determining that information.
